荷东的发源地在香港，是香港尖沙咀一家著名大型 Disco 舞厅Hollywood East 的名称。
<br>这家 Disco 舞厅的驻场DJ ALEX（杨振龙）及Patrick Delay将欧美的流行舞曲重新混音 (Remix) 后播放，
没有想到反响出奇的好。迅速成为流行时尚。
<br>香港 FACE （飞时） 唱片公司出版的《荷东》系列舞曲音乐，迅速风靡东南亚。
从 1987 年开始，中国唱片总公司广州分公司从香港 FACE （飞时） 唱片公司引进《荷东》舞曲，
也就是《Hollywood East Star Trax - 东方好莱坞明星舞会》，简称“荷东”
中唱版《荷东》中前数集的歌曲，基本是原唱作品，在原唱作品重新混音。后续的几集中翻唱作品开始增多。
全套系列最经典的音乐是荷东的前三集和第九集，选择的多是欧洲的舞曲，尤其以意大利的 Italo Disco 为主。
从第四集开始，其他类型的音乐出现在《荷东》系列中，包括拉丁舞、现代舞、摇滚、说唱等都在《荷东》领域范畴中。
当然是 欧洲Disco依然是《荷东》的主基调。<br>《荷东》和现在的跳舞音乐气质迥异，现在的跳舞音乐，节奏更加强劲，却向着冷、绝望、残酷、工业的路数上走。
《荷东》的年代，是全世界共同的美好年代，所以它骨子里是热的、媚的、柔软的、性感的。
